[If this wasn't a fateful encounter, then Sigma had absolutely no idea how one would look like.
When they met for the first time, he had been visiting one of his friends in the hospital. It was nothing serious, but he needed to be hospitalized for a few days and since there was no helping it, Sigma offered to help him out with all kinds of things: from bringing his friend stuff from his room back in the dorms to shopping for snacks or soft drinks. It wasn't like Sigma had anything better to do, really...just a thesis to write. No big deal, especially since inspiration he needed was nowhere to be found.
That afternoon, he had brought his friend his favorite book, so he could kill some time when he would be alone. That was when it happened.
She entered the room.
Honestly speaking, to Sigma, it was more like she gracefully glided across the hospital room more than just walking. And her smile, he had never seen such a radiant smile. It made him completely ignore the fact that her eyes seemed rather tired—all he could notice was how beautiful they were.
He couldn't even make out what she was saying, but fortunately for Sigma, she just spoke to his friend and went out in a haste so she wouldn't bother them. It wasn't too difficult to pick up that Sigma would love to be bothered for hours and his friend didn't fail to notice that.]
Ain't I lucky?
[One lucky bastard...Sigma looked around the room, trying to come up with a plan how to become a patient as well. His friend could tell what was going on in his head and just laughed before giving him a box of chocolates he kept in the drawer.]
Well, I thought about giving her this...I must ask you for your help one more time, pal.
[Truly touched, Sigma took the chocolates and went on how he owed his friend one. He sure did, but before repaying his debt, there was an important task he needed to fulfill immediately.
That's why he's standing in the hallway right now, looking around and grasping the box of chocolates tightly behind his back. Just where is she...]
[ The clinic where Diana worked was as busy as ever; just another sign to Diana that time doesn't really stop for anyone, as much as she could honestly use the break. Lately, she's been throwing herself headfirst into her work, which was a welcome distraction, if anything. After all, the more time she spent working with other people, the less time she had to think about, well, anything else, really.
Poor Diana's been having a pretty rough go of it recently, and the divorce had left her feeling down for the count, after all, between the paperwork and the reaction of her...well, now ex-husband, she supposes. Every day, she had to dread the thought of him coming to her workplace to harass her. And every day, even now during the late August months, where the dry Nevada heat was at its strongest, she continued to wear long-sleeved sweaters, if only to keep her bruises out of sight.
But still, she came to work with a smile on her face, checking on every patient, making sure everyone else was having a good day. It was the best part of the job for Diana, and it was the one thing she thought she was really good at; if nothing else, she's passionate about what she does, and she loves the sight of helping people making full and speedy recoveries, even if it does take its toll on her. Even Rebecca, the head nurse at the clinic, noticed she's been overworking herself, but, in light of her situation, who could blame her...
Today is certainly no exception to that, as she's been running around from room to room at maximum overdrive. She didn't exactly have anyone that needed urgent care, but there were a lot of patients to handle during her short shift, so she's been scampering back and forth. It isn't until much later in the afternoon that she's able to finally take a bit of a breather in the hallway; even then, though, she's so absorbed in everything as she reads over her clipboard, and feeling so drained from the stress starting to catch up to her.
It's there that she bumps into Sigma. ...Quite literally walks right into his chest. ]
O-oh, gosh, please forgive me, I'm so sorry! I should have watched where I was going, are you alright?!
[ Sigma's a big guy, and Diana is tiny, so if anything, Diana's the one who would get hurt from the encounter, but she's apologizing so gratuitously anyway. Stupid, stupid, such a klutz... ]
[It really must be his lucky day—not only did he find a cute girl, but also said cute girl bumped right into him. Yes, definitely a lucky day. However, instead of just standing here and contemplating how fortunate he is, he should just respond...which he eventually does, of course, but before that happens Sigma just stares at her, making the situation way more awkward than it was, probably.]
N-No, I'm the one who should be sorry! I'm fine, really...what about you, though? I'm pretty sturdy, I hope you didn't get hurt or anything...I'm sure that your patients would kill me if something happened to you.
[His attempt at a joke...well, there was an attempt, at least?]
[ If anything, poor Diana is fretting too much to realize that Sigma takes a while to respond to that. Her papers are everywhere now, so she's scrambling a bit to pick them all up. What a mess... ]
I-I'm, um, I'm not! I mean, I'm fine! I'm okay!
[ She must be way more tired than she thought, to be in shambles like this... ]
Um, are you waiting for someone? Visiting hours are almost over for the day, but, if you'd like, I can squeeze you in for just a bit longer! You won't get in trouble, I promise..!
O-oh, no, it's fine, you don't have to! You shouldn't have to clean up my messes, that's just plain sill--Oof!
[ Making a stranger bend down to help, Diana, you're terrible...
That's the thought that goes through her head just before their heads collide! And when that happens, she can't help but go beet red, hiding her face in her clipboard... ]
No, no, it's totally my fault! Gosh, I'm so sorry, I'm such a mess today...
[ She frets just slightly, but, hearing that he was looking for her, already poor Diana's heart is racing at a mile a minute... ]
F-for me? Is everything okay..? I, um, didn't do anything wrong, did I..? A-aside from bumping into you twice, of course!
[This is a disaster. Maybe he should just give her chocolates and run far, far, far away and forget about her. The thing is...he doubts that would be possible, especially the last part of his plan.]
It is! You didn't... [What a mess, pull yourself together, Sigma.] I just...I wanted to give you this.
[The moment Sigma shows her the box of chocolates, Diana learns why he's been scooping up these papers just with one hand.]
Thank you for taking care of him.
[Slowly running out of excuses to talk to her, Sigma's mind is racing. What else should he say...there must be something...]
[ Well, that might just be the exact opposite of what she's expecting, goodness gracious. And to think she was fretting so much for a second, there...
It doesn't hit her just how much she needed a gesture like that until she sees the box of chocolates. It's so nice that she actually starts to tear up just at the sight of it, when she realizes just what's going on here. ]
Y-you really don't have to thank me. I'm just...you know, doing my job, is all...
[ She sniffles, ever so lightly. God, she really has been having a rough go of it lately, to think she's going to start crying just over a stranger giving her a box of chocolates... ]
Is there really such a thing as a person who doesn't like chocolate...but really, thank you. I honestly really needed something like that today, it's been...well, obviously you could tell, I'm sure.
[ She tries her best to stifle a laugh, but it comes out through a few tears. God, what a rollercoaster... ]
...Besides, usually you ask a girl's name before you invite them to coffee...
[ At least he's not the only one! Her heart's kind of going a mile a minute, but at least he seems cute, despite the fact that he's built like a ton of bricks? ]
W-well, if you want to meet up somewhere, I'd, um, prefer we did it somewhere a little further away...here's really not the best place. I-I mean, it's been so busy here recently, so it wouldn't be fair to you if our conversations were cut short because I had to run to another patient's room!
[ That, and, you know. Sometimes a certain someone likes to make surprise visits and throw a bit of a fit. ]
I work late nights most of the time, but, if you wouldn't mind waiting until the weekend...
Wait, she didn't refuse? Sure, he tried to be charming and all, but Sigma was worried that he may be a bit too fast. It might have been the very first time he was so anxious about it, too. Which he's going to realize later.]
O-Of course. We can meet wherever you want and anytime you want. Just name the place and I'll be there.
[ Nah, it sounds like it could be fun. He seems like a sweet person, giving her chocolates like that. And honestly, she could really, really use the time away from it...
Besides, he seems a little nervous. ...A lot nervous, really, but. It's the least she can do to make up for making such a goshdarn scene. ]
You're the one asking me out, aren't you? Here, I'll give you my number...
[ She hastily scribbles down a number towards the bottom of one of her pages on the clipboard, and folds it up to give it to him... ]
You can figure out the place before then. I drive, so it's not like I'll have any problem getting there...
Sigma has just realized that he might have been mistaken about Diana; a shy girl wouldn't be joking like that, would she? But that's a good sign and Sigma finds himself grinning at her shortly after.
Which is something he should do after they part ways, but it can't be helped.]
Alright, I'll call you right away when I find the right place. I shouldn't bother you any longer, should I...?

I'm...I'm sorry! I didn't mean to...let me help you with that.
